Two of the deceased were confirmed to have had the virus, and Canadian authorities identified another case, bringing the total number of infections among cruise passengers to 11.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had earlier reported eight confirmed cases and two suspected ones on May 5th. The outbreak's rapid spread and the potential for human-to-human transmission, albeit rare, have raised concerns about the virus's impact on public health. Hantavirus, a group of viruses carried by rodents, typically does not pass from person to person, but the Andes virus strain, responsible for this outbreak, has been known to cause rare instances of human transmission.
The ship's doctor and nurse collected samples aboard, which will be tested upon arrival in Rotterdam. Further tests are scheduled for Monday afternoon to confirm whether the crew members have been infected with the hantavirus. The WHO has recommended a 42-day isolation period for those leaving the MV Hondius, emphasizing the need for thorough screening and monitoring.
The cruise's itinerary took an unexpected turn when Cape Verde, the intended final destination, prevented passengers from disembarking. The WHO and the European Union intervened, urging Spain to allow the ship to sail to the Canary Islands and coordinate the repatriation of those on board. The ship eventually arrived in Tenerife on May 10th, where the remaining passengers disembarked.
The MV Hondius then set sail for the Netherlands on May 11th, carrying crew members and medical staff. The Rotterdam port prepared for the ship's arrival, providing 25 mobile homes equipped with catering and satellite communications for the crew's self-isolation. René de Vries, the port's harbour master, assured that the ship would be thoroughly cleaned before it could depart again.
